#028: Internet Growth 1996-2018

When I was in middle school and we first got internet at our home in 1997, the small bubble I lived in…BURST.

The same rural places I went to before, are changing too. With little outside interaction.

I feel the change is more than just through our phones but is actually reaching our human mind directly. I’ve read somewhere our bodies are receivers and our thoughts are connecting to the same mind. Therefore a lot of our ideas are shared with many other people out there.

How it started

Originally the Internet was an INTRANET which served laboratories engaged in government research.

They had pages where data lived.

Since it’s public inception in 1994, it’s expanded to serve millions of users and a multitude of purposes in all parts of the world.

Similar to my wonder and amazement of getting internet for the first time in 1997, there are people all around the world coming online today.

Smartphones are hitting markets where they never had internet before in emerging markets.

They get to skip a few levels, since online infrastructure is already set up for them.

They hit the ground running.

In 1997 16 million vs 4.2 billion people online today

In December 1997, when I first got access to the internet, only 1.7% of the population was online. I was 1 of 16,000,000 people online.

As of January 2018, 4.2 billion people are online. 55.1% of the world population. Today I am 1 of 4,200,000,000 people online.

Within 20 years, half the world got online. That means, we are now connected to half of the world population. Powerful.

I don’t know where it’s all going, but the world is changing everywhere we go.
